Life is a delicate dance between the banks of following the rules and embracing freedom. Dance too close to the bank of rules, and one finds themselves suffocating in rules. Dance too close to the bank of freedom, and one finds themselves isolated and lonely. Leaders face the eternal dilemma of how to promote the kind of group dance that nurtures freedom of expression while adhering to rules.
Similarly, group participants face the challenges of dancing too close to the rules at times and, at other times, dancing all by themselves. Some dance away from the bank of freedom by asking for clear rules and structure that make them feel safe. Others dance away from rules by fighting for their self-expression that feels stifled by expectations.
The challenge of leadership is to set the stage for the group to embrace the delicate dance that will unlock their full potential. Join this intensive with the intention of examining your dance in life.
Adhering to the rules is highly valued when it facilitates the development of the group culture. Embracing freedom is highly valued when it allows members to give themselves permission to "fail" or "resist" the therapeutic contract and study the reasons for this resistance. Studying this resistance is the heart of the group work
The group leader helps define the group’s direction, provides structure, and guides participants toward the desired outcome. Their task is to clarify what is expected of the group members, what is meant by cooperation, and how cooperation differs from mere agreement with the terms of the contract.
